Time is Winding Down!
With less than a week to go until opening day of the spring turkey hunt, it is definitely time to buckle down and get serious. With the odd winter we experienced this year I was a little concerned at first that the animals would be thrown off of their natural schedules. With the snow and warmer temperatures coming and going throughout the last few months my concern was if the birds would adjust to the conditions. This could mean hitting the mating periods earlier or later than expected. A few weeks can surely alter the results of the turkey hunt, definitely increasing the difficulty of the hunt. It seems however that everything is working out as it should and the timing for the spring opener will come at an opportune time.
With time winding down before open season I've been using the recent warm spell to my advantage to get out scouting for local birds. Scouting for any animal is key to most successful hunts. Taking time to find out where the birds are and possibly locating a specific bird that you wish to pursue can be very helpful in making this year a successful hunting season.
I also use the weeks prior to turkey season to build or touch up new or existing blinds that I plan to use for the season. Turkeys have very keen eyesight so staying concealed and hiding any movement is essential when trying to bring these birds in close.
Preparing for upcoming seasons is a good way to release some pent up energy and excitement. Just another reason to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. Get out there and enjoy!
