This past weekend, my dad and I were able to get out for a few morning hunts. We were accompanied by a dear family friend by the name of King.
King was a huge part of my father's life growing up and has definitely been an influential person in mine as well. He has inspired us to be the hunters we are today. I was quite excited when I heard that King would be around for the weekend, and naturally, dad and I immediately put plans together for some weekend hunting.
The first two mornings we were able to set-up in a field with some fresh fall seeding. This field turned out to be quite action-packed so suffice to say, a few piles of birds were made over the course of a few days. It was amazing to be able to have a few good shoots with King.
As the weekend carried on, the hunts became progressively quieter, however, this wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. We decided to try another field that had just had the corn cut off of it. We didn’t have the success we had at the previous field but this didn’t dampen our spirits in the least. With little activity from the birds, we were able to engage in more conversation and listen as King shared memories and relived old hunting stories. Aside from seeing the smile on his face after a round of shooting, listening to King’s stories was my favourite part of the weekend.
Many laughs were had and some memories were definitely made this past weekend. Lots of shooting was done and jabs were made in good fun, at both the good shots and the bad.
It was definitely a weekend I will remember for a long time. I look forward to King's next visit and I hope we can arrange another waterfowl hunt this year.
