This time of year is the perfect time to start thinking ahead to the fall deer hunt. I know this seems soon and I don't mean to get anyone overly excited, but it is always wise to plan ahead.
A regular task which I complete each spring is creating and refreshing mineral sites. Spring is a time in which whitetail deer and many other animals are looking for minerals and nutrients.
During the winter months deer usually head out and yard up in different wintering properties which better suit their needs. With the snow disappearing and the warmer weather becoming more prevalent, the deer are starting to leave the wintered areas and return to their regular properties. That being said, I like having my mineral sites ready for their return.
Both male and female deer are looking for, and are in need of nutrients at this time of year. The mineral sites are a great source of needed nutrients which help grow a strong and healthy deer population.
I always like to have a trail camera placed at my mineral sites to gain as much info about how well the deer wintered, any new deer in the area and especially to watch the growth of the bucks through the summer months.
Because the mineral plays an important role in antler growth in the bucks, it is always interesting to see the changes throughout the year.
It’s never too early to plan ahead for the next season. Making efforts to help the deer and wildlife population will always prove beneficial!
